Research Infrastructures

_____________

Snapshot overview:

Research Infrastructures aim to address global environmental, social and economic challenges by maximizing the contribution of science and technology to match societal needs and increase Europe’s competitiveness. Research infrastructures are facilities that provide resources and services for the research communities to conduct research and foster innovation in their fields.

The Research Infrastructures work programme is structured around the following five destinations:

  1. INFRADEV: To enable the development, consolidation and optimization of the European research infrastructures landscape, and maintain global leadership. As well as contributing towards to an impactful European Research Area, by reinforcing RI capacities, their role at the global level and the policy-making in this field
  2. INFRAEOSC: To enable an operational, open and FAIR EOSC ecosystem. The aim is to deliver a “Web of FAIR Data and Services” for Science: a trusted virtual environment supporting Open Science, based on key horizontal core functions, with corresponding e-infrastructures, and service layers accessible to researchers across disciplines throughout Europe
  3. INFRASERV: To enable R&I to address major societal challenges, notably in health, in support of the green and digital transformation and ensuring resilience to crises as well as to support curiosity-driven research and advancement of frontier knowledge in broad scientific domains
  4. INFRATECH: To enable new discoveries and keep Europe’s RIs at the highest level of excellence, while paving the way to innovative solutions to societal challenges and new industrial applications, products and services
  5. INFRANET: To enable collaboration without boundaries, providing high-bandwidth networks and network services to interconnect researchers, data and computing resources in a nondiscriminatory way regardless of the location of the users and the resources

Examples of resources and services provided include, but are not limited to:

  • Equipment or sets of instruments
  • Knowledge-related facilities,
  • Archives or scientific data infrastructures
  • Computing systems
  • Communication networks
  • High-bandwidth networks and network services
  • Integrated RI services

Programme scope:

The key objectives of the Research Infrastructures are the following:

  • Consolidating and developing the landscape of European research infrastructures with the aim to reduce fragmentation and avoid duplication across the innovation system
  • Consolidating and developing the innovation potential of European research infrastructures and activities for innovation and training
  • Foster the innovation potential of Research Infrastructures by making industry more aware of opportunities offered to improve their products and by the co-development of advanced technologies e.g. ATTRACT
  • Use Research Infrastructures for science diplomacy, i.e. using science collaboration to address common problems and build partnerships internationally
  • Join forces internationally to construct and run large, complex or expensive infrastructures, respond to global challenges and/or foster combining skills, data and efforts of the world’s best scientists
